September 2024, 77th Air Force Birthday Celebration
About 40 Air Force Veterans and their spouses came together at Straight-to-Ale on Saturday evening, 21 September, to celebrate the 77th Birthday of the United States Air Force. After a dinner of ribs and chicken wings, the group completed their toasts to the President; Chief of Staff; to those serving overseas; to our POWs; to active duty USAF, Guard, and Reserves; to those leaders who founded the USAF; and finally to our own Community Partners. Then Chapter President John Pennell led the group in a lively and spirited game of USAF trivia before determining the oldest and youngest airman present to join Lt Gen Heath Collins, Director Missile Defense Agency, in cutting the birthday cake with an Air Force Academy Sabre. The oldest airman present was CMSgt (ret) Carl Penaranda and the youngest airman present was Major Laura Meins. The Air Force song was sung heartily by all and the cake was cut!! Also of note, for the first time, an Air Force Guardian General Officer, Major General Jason Cothern, also assigned to the Missile Defense Agency, was in attendance. In sum, it was a great night for Air Force camaraderie!! Many thanks to Chapter Community Partner Straight-to-Ale for the fine food, drink and atmosphere again this year!!
July 2024, AFA at AirVenture 2024
by Ken Philippart, images by Ken Philippart and Susan Mallett
Members of Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Alabama attended the world’s largest aviation gathering, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin from July 22 – 28. This year set another attendance record with 687,000 people attending throughout the week-long event.
For the third consecutive year, Alabama State President Ken Philippart arranged for Alabama AFA members who would be attending AirVenture to get together for a group photo at the iconic brown arch. This year, AFA members Susan Mallett and guest Barbara Walters-Phillips, and Lisa and Ken Philippart gathered for the group picture.
Over 10,000 aircraft ranging from operational military aircraft, home-builts, vintage warbirds, antique general aviation aircraft, ultralights, unmanned aerial vehicles, sea planes and powered parachutes converged on Whitman Field for the annual celebration of all things aviation. Daily airshows included military flybys, aerobatics, vintage warbird formations, World War II reenactments, parachuting teams and the highlighting of capabilities of the Air Force Materiel Command. An “only at Oshkosh” moment was a formation flight of a Canadian Avro Lancaster bomber with the only two flying B-29s in the world, Fifi and Doc. The Canadian Snowbirds performed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Italian Fre Tricolori demonstration team also performed while the Air Force Thunder-birds and Navy Blue Angels both made flybys during the week. Two evening airshows capped the event with aircraft equipped with LEDs and fireworks dispensers followed by a fireworks show culminating in AirVenture’s signature Wall of Fire fireball display.
A wide variety of presentations were given on topics ranging from the decision to drop the atomic bomb to recreating a flying replica of the Wright B flyer. Aviation legends such as Burt Rutan spoke during the week. AFA Alabama VP for Education and Civil Air Patrol Educational Outreach program coordinator Susan Mallet gave a presentation on the educational resources available through CAP and AFA.
AFA State members Lisa Philippart and Susan Mallett also participated in WomenVenture, the 17th annual celebration of female aviators and aviation enthusiasts at AirVenture. The luncheon this year commemorated women in rotary wing aviation. The featured speaker was Nicole Battjes, CEO of Rainbow Helicopters in Hawaii and Chair, Helicopter Association International. The traditional WomenVenture group photo on Boeing Plaza was also taken.
There is an abundance of activities at AirVenture but AFA members still found time to meet for dinner and socialize with other aviation enthusiasts. The stories and passion for flight shared by this group made for an enjoyable evening befitting AirVenture’s moniker as an “aviation family reunion.”
State AFA members are already making plans to return next year. If you are one of them, please join us for the next AFA group picture. See you in Oshkosh!
May 2024, Chapter 335 Doolittle Raiders Commemoration
Huntsville, AL:
To commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, our chapter held a unique variation on its annual toast to the Raiders — a full evening event that included a potluck dinner, a toast, and a viewing of the World War II movie, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Twelve chapter members and guests, including members of the Rocket City Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, attended. Two of the guests brought relevant mementos to share including a framed picture of a B-25 signed by several of the Doolittle Raiders, a flight helmet and goggles. The program began with a welcome from Chapter President John Pennell followed by an invocation by chapter member and community partner Lisa Philippart. Lisa related how Lt Col Jimmy Doolittle had asked his co-pilot, Capt Dick Cole, to include him in his prayers prior to the mission. After dinner, chapter member and Vietnam veteran Andy Bevilacqua led the group in a unique toast that had been written by his late father-in-law who flew B-29s in World War II. The toast read in part, “Here’s to the crewmen that didn’t come back, to their souls then beneath the Pacific…here’s to the bombers that fly nevermore, who fell – a nation to save.” The group toasted with Hennessy Cognac, as the original Doolittle Raiders reunion toasts had used. With the toast completed, the group watched Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. All who attended enjoyed this unique twist on the annual Doolittle Raid commemoration and thanked Lisa Philippart for allowing free use of her business facility to host the event.

March 2024, Chapter 335 Sponsors Korean War Vet Flight in Korean Warbird
Huntsville, AL:
Our AFA Tennessee Valley Chapter recently sponsored a flight in an historic Korean War L-17B for a Korean War veteran. The flight was given by the Rocket City Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) in their aircraft, a 1946 former US Air Force L-17B named Kunsan Cadillac that flew liaison missions during the Korean War. As a member of the North Alabama Veterans and Fraternal Organization Coalition, or NAVFOC, our Chapter worked with Legacy 4 Korean War Vets to identify veterans interested in taking a flight in the L-17. Our Chapter agreed to donate the funds to cover flights for the first two veterans wanting to fly. The first flight occurred at Pryor Field in Tanner, Alabama, on 8 March 2024. Ken Philippart represented our chapter in welcoming the 90-year old Korean War Navy veteran Duane Hoffman as he arrived for his flight. Hoffman has served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955 as a petty officer third class aerial photographer on the USS Midway. Ken presented PO3 Hoffman with an L-17B t-shirt and patch to wear during his flight. After a pre-flight safety briefing by CAF pilot LTC Jim Burch, US Army retired, Hoffman climbed into the right seat of the L-17B. Once in the air, Hoffman, a former private pilot, took the controls and flew the aircraft for about 15 minutes. The flight was an appropriate way for AFA to honor the service of our sometimes overlooked Korean War veterans.

February 2023, Chapter Supports Air Force Junior ROTC at Bob Jones High School
Huntsville, AL:
The Tennessee Valley Chapter has been a longtime supporter of the AFJROTC program at Bob Jones HS. Working closely with Major Melissa Lacey, Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI), the Chapter has sponsored drill team events, provided information briefings on aircraft, Air Force careers, pilot training, mission planning, and aviation weather. Last fall, the Chapter took on an additional task when Major Lacey told us Cadet Major Elian Castaneda had been selected under the AFJROTC Flight Academy Scholarship Program to obtain his Private Pilot’s License (PPL) at Air Force expense. However due to weather and scheduling issues, he was unable to complete the program to obtain his PPL while at Emory Riddle University in Prescott AZ. To complete the program, Cadet Castaneda needed to accomplish a 1.5 hour cross country flight and to take the PPL evaluation. The Chapter contacted Dr. Cobb Alexander, a local surgeon, and Certified Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor (CFI-I) to obtain Cadet Castaneda’s necessary instructions and authorizations. Dr. Alexander donated his instructional time to the cause. Dr. Alexander also contacted Max Gurgew, a local Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) who also agreed to donate his time to give Cadet Castaneda his exam. That left only the expense of renting the aircraft for the instruction, cross country, and exam. The chapter contacted another longtime partner, FlyQuest, a local non-profit specializing in assisting young people to understand and appreciate aviation. For 10 years, FlyQuest, has been awakening dreams and providing opportunities for young people to pursue aerospace education and aviation careers and to experience the joy of flight! Like the Tennessee Valley AFA Chapter, FlyQuest, has worked with Maj Lacey over the years in helping inspire students about the excitement of flight. Helping Cadet Castaneda was a natural fit with FlyQuest’s mission. FlyQuest and the Chapter each donated $250 to raise the $500 needed to pay for rental of the aircraft. With these combined efforts and Cadet Castaneda’s skill and perseverance, he passed his flight exam on 18 November 2022. On 27 January 2023, David Knies of FlyQuest and John Pennell, President of the Chapter, presented Cadet Castaneda, and his mother, Ms. Brenda Castaneda, the $500 check. Tim Davis, our chapter’s liaison with the Bob Jones HS AFJROTC Program and who headed up this project, was also present. Huntsville, AL:
AFA Tennessee Valley Chapter 335 member Tim Davis recently taught an Air Force JROTC class at Bob Jones High School. The 17 juniors and seniors in the Science of Flight course have spent the semester learning about tools of navigation and flight planning. Maj (retired) Melissa Lacey, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, covered human physiology and the effects of flight on the human body. She also taught flight planning by use of classroom flight simulators and SkyVector. Not being an aviator, Maj Lacey invited fellow AFA chapter members to assist in teaching her class. Chapter 335 member Tim Davis, a pilot with over 50 years of experience, answered the call and volunteered. Tim really loves flying, and has great fun sharing flying stories and knowledge with anyone and everyone. He spent 2 hours showing the Cadets how to read an aeronautical chart, plot out a route, determine their true north course, and then turn that into a magnetic compass heading to the destination. He graciously purchased sectional charts and protractors for the cadets to use. AFA members are invited to share their experiences with Maj Lacey’s AFJROTC class by contacting her at mmlacey@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
